artist statement

I arrived at textile art through my hobby of quilt making. As an artist, I am interested in themes that are related to the symbolism of the quilt. A blanket can be used for warmth, to cover the sick, the weak, the cold and the fragile. In my art, I explore ideas that need care and attention. For me, there is an obvious extension from the unique quilted blankets I create to my thought provoking textile art.

Many of my pieces incorporate plastic and paper as well as cloth. The cloth I use is recycled from businesses that use fabrics for clothing or home accessories. I embellish the cloth with paints and thread when creating my work. Finding new ways to use old things and not consuming more is something that is at the forefront of my work.

Through my art, I hope to bring to the viewer an awareness of consumption, wastefulness, consumerism and a sensitivity to issues that I feel need attention and protection.
